A gallery of images from past GNOIS activities shows a sample of what we do, where we go, and the range of ways to get involved. Watch for opportunities on this site, on Facebook, or in email if you join. We’d love for you to jump in.
GNOIS sponsors a range of activities, from garden visits to sales to field trips. Our meetings, usually quarterly, are open to the public. Some meetings will be at the East Bank Regional Library in Metairie, but a few will be outdoors at our nursery in City Park. Expect a program or activity with a chance to ask questions, enjoy snacks, and visit with others who share your interest in irises. There are always door prizes, especially irises, at meetings and at many events.
If you are a member, you will receive an email or newsletter with information about activities, but you can keep up with us on Facebook and the website. You can check our current calendar by clicking the button.
GNOIS offers and arranges opportunities to volunteer to work with irises in garden settings. We work at our Island Iris Nursery in City Park every Thursday morning. We mostly do routine maintenance, weeding, repotting, and labeling. We also dig irises for our sales, usually held twice a year, with bare root rhizomes sold in the fall and potted irises in the spring.
Donations to public plantings is a significant activity and the principal reason for our nursery. Volunteers are critical and often help prepare irises for donation.
Attending our volunteer events is a good way to increase your iris collection and enhance your garden. GNOIS grows all the species and over 500 cultivars at our nursery, and there are always thank-you irises for those who help.
GNOIS is happy to receive financial support. We put contributions to work primarily at our nursery. The place is nearly an acre in size and requires fertilizer, mulch, manure, containers, ground cover, and tools of various kinds.
